Use old routers for WAN simulation
May 18th, 2013
When I was playing with Citrix today, I needed to slow down my 1Gbs connection. My first thought was to use a WAN simulator, but the cost for one, even the entry model is over $3000 . Luckily I have a few old Cisco Routers that I can use. There is a feature called Committed Access Rate (CAR) that you can se to limit the traffic on an interace. Let limit ICMP traffic on interface 0 to 8kps , 2KB for normal and 4KB for excess burst values

R1 (config)# access-list 100 permit icmp any any R1 (config)# int f0/0 R1 (config-if)# rate-limit input access-group 100 8000 2000 4000 conform-action transmit axceed-action drop |
Let’s test it

Type escape sequence to abort. Sending 100, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 1.1.1.2, timeout is 2 seconds: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.!! Success rate is 95 percent (95/100), round-trip min/avg/max = 4/17/48 ms |

R1#sh int f0/0 rate-limit FastEthernet0/0 Output matches: all traffic params: 8000 bps, 2000 limit, 4000 extended limit conformed 95 packets, 10478 bytes; action: transmit exceeded 7 packets, 912 bytes; action: drop last packet: 14992ms ago, current burst: 1326 bytes last cleared 00:00:15 ago, conformed 0 bps, exceeded 0 bps < |
